Crucial Ballistix 1,600MHz review

This Ballistix kit is sporty, but can it run with overclocking big boys?

Jump to Section:

Our Verdict

A nice enough kit for the cash, but stingy overclocking headroom limits enthusiast appeal.

For

  • Crucial's rep for reliability
  • Competitively priced for a 6GB kit

Against

  • Not exactly over-specced
  • Limited overclocking capacity

We liked

CPUs that drop into Intel's LGA 1366 socket are the highest performing on the planet. They deserve decent memory. In our book, that means a minimum buffer of 6GB and some decent frequencies.

The triple-channel Crucial Ballistix 1,600MHz delivers on both counts. The Crucial brand is also reassuring in terms of its reputation for compatibility and reliability.

We disliked

Big CPU overclocks demand maximum flexibility from the memory subsystems. That means memory DIMMs that deliver a wide operating range in terms of frequencies. This Crucial kit, however, tops out at 1,600MHz. Ideally, we'd also like to see better quality cooling.
